What are the disadvantages of grade 5 titanium?

The high strength of Grade 5 can also increase the difficulty of some downstream processing operations.

Compared with commercially pure titanium, Grade 5 strip typically requires greater attention to the following factors:

  • Cold forming: Complex bending and forming require tighter control of process parameters;
  • Springback: Greater attention is required to springback control after forming high-strength material;
  • Tooling: Stamping, machining, and forming may place higher demands on tooling and processing conditions;
  • Cost: If the design does not require the strength level of Grade 5, using a higher-alloy grade may not be the most economical option.

Therefore, Grade 5 is better suited to projects genuinely driven by strength, weight reduction, or high-performance requirements.
