Tapered shaft

Radial precision forging can form a continuously varying tapered section, with shaft diameters and the taper profile at different positions controlled according to the drawing.

Tapered shaft

Recommended titanium forged shaft alloys from Chalco Titanium

Chalco Titanium can provide titanium forged shafts in multiple alloys. The following grades are suitable for different structures and service requirements, and customer-specified materials can also be supplied.

  • TA2 titanium forged shaft

Commercially pure titanium with strong corrosion performance, suitable for long shafts and agitator shafts in chemical and corrosion-service equipment. It can be used for one-piece forged titanium agitator shafts.

  • TC4 titanium forged shaft

A commonly used high-strength titanium alloy that combines strength with a weight advantage and can be used for stepped shafts, transmission shafts and high-load shaft forgings.

  • TA15 titanium forged shaft

Offers high specific strength and good overall properties, making it suitable for stepped shafts and structural shaft forgings in aerospace and high-performance equipment.

  • TC6 titanium forged shaft

Suitable for shaft components with higher strength and load requirements. One-piece titanium alloy forged shafts and blanks for subsequent machining are available.

  • TC11 titanium forged shaft

Suitable for high-performance variable-section shaft forgings. Radial precision forging can be used to produce variable-diameter shafts and complex shaft blanks.

Titanium forged shaft alloy selection guidance

If corrosion performance is the main concern, TA2 can be considered first. For shaft components requiring a balance of strength, weight and general versatility, TC4 is a commonly used option. TA15 can be considered for aerospace and high-performance structural shafts, while TC6 can be selected for high-load shaft components. For high-performance variable-diameter shafts and complex shaft blanks, TC11 can be considered.

If you are unsure which titanium alloy is more suitable for your project, provide the service environment, load conditions and drawing requirements. Chalco Titanium can assist in recommending an appropriate titanium forged shaft grade.

Chalco Titanium titanium forged shaft machining and dimensional control

For long, stepped and variable-section titanium forged shafts, Chalco Titanium can control the forged blank based on the final part dimensions and subsequent machining plan to reduce downstream machining difficulty.

Titanium forged shaft vs. machined titanium bar

For large-diameter stepped, tapered and variable-section shafts, turning directly from a constant-diameter titanium bar often requires substantial material removal. A titanium forged shaft can be shaped during forging so that the blank profile is closer to the final part geometry.

Comparison item Titanium forged shaft Machined titanium bar
Blank shape Steps, tapers and diameter transitions can be pre-forged Usually starts from a constant-diameter round bar
Material utilization Less material removal for complex shaft geometries More machining for shafts with large diameter differences
Machining allowance Can be reserved for each shaft section according to the final drawing Determined by the original bar size
Subsequent machining Reduces rough turning and heavy material-removal operations Usually requires more rough machining
Suitable products Large, stepped, tapered and complex shaft components Simple, small-size shaft components

Chalco Titanium titanium forged shaft manufacturing process

Chalco Titanium develops the forging process according to the titanium alloy grade, shaft-section structure and final dimensions. Open-die forging and radial precision forging are combined to form straight, stepped, tapered and other complex shaft forgings.

Raw material inspection → Saw cutting → Heating → Open-die breakdown forging → Radial precision forging → Heat treatment → Straightening → Machining → Inspection

Raw material inspection and cutting

Verify the material grade, heat number and raw material quality, then saw-cut the stock according to the forged-shaft diameter, length and shaft-section structure, reserving an appropriate billet size for subsequent upsetting, drawing and precision forging.

Titanium shaft raw material cutting

Heating

Heating schedules are established for different titanium and titanium alloy grades. The heating furnaces can reach up to 1250°C, with TUS controlled to ±7°C for gas-fired furnaces and up to ±5°C for electric furnaces, supporting more consistent heating of long and large-section billets.

Furnace heating

Open-die breakdown forging

A rapid forging press is used for upsetting, drawing and related operations to adjust billet cross-section and length and provide sufficient plastic deformation. Large forgings can be broken down on a 100MN rapid forging press, with forging control accuracy up to ±1 mm.

Radial precision forging

Stepped, tapered and special-shaped shafts can be formed on an RF-40 horizontal CNC radial precision forging machine:

  • Maximum feed size: 500 mm
  • Maximum forging force: 950 t
  • Maximum forging frequency: 290 strokes/min
  • Standard forged diameter for solid round parts: Φ60–400 mm
  • Special diameter: up to Φ450 mm
  • Maximum bar processing length: 13,000 mm
  • CNC radial precision forging controls the diameter and profile of different shaft sections, bringing the blank closer to the final part shape.

Heat treatment and straightening

The heat-treatment schedule is established according to the alloy grade, property requirements and delivery condition. Long shafts can be straightened after heat treatment to improve forging straightness and provide a stable machining reference for subsequent turning and finish machining.
