Ti-6Al-4V titanium round bar, commonly known as Grade 5, is the most widely used α-β titanium alloy worldwide. Containing approximately 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, it offers an excellent balance of strength, weight, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability.

High strength

The density of Ti-6Al-4V titanium round bar is about 4.43 g/cm³, which is only 60% of steel, but its tensile strength is as high as 900-1100 MPa (depending on the heat treatment state). This means that under the same strength requirements, Titanium round bars can achieve more than 40% structural weight reduction .

Excellent corrosion resistance

Ti-6Al-4V titanium round bars are stable in most oxidizing and neutral corrosion environments, especially in seawater, chloride ion and high humidity environments. Actual test data shows that the corrosion rate of Ti-6Al-4V in 3% NaCl solution is less than 0.05 mm/a, which is much better than stainless steel . High temperature resistance

Ti-6Al-4V can maintain good strength and dimensional stability in an environment with a long-term use temperature of up to 400°C. It can still maintain more than 80% of its room temperature strength at 316°C, making it suitable for manufacturing engine parts, hot gas pipes and high-temperature fixtures.

Excellent processing performance

Although titanium alloys are generally difficult to machine, Ti-6Al-4V has relatively good cutting performance among titanium alloys. Its Brinell hardness is around 330–360 HBW (annealed state). With appropriate tooling and cooling conditions, stable machining can be achieved, making it suitable for CNC turning, drilling, milling and other processes.

The cutting tools should be tungsten carbide C1-C4 or cobalt-based high-speed cutting tools. Generally, its machining characteristics are similar to austenitic stainless steel. Ti 6AL-4v grade 5 titanium round bar stock can be machined using low speeds, high feed rates, rigid tools and the use of chlorine-free cutting fluids.

For high volume projects, stress relief heat treatment is recommended after rough machining to avoid machining distortion and improve dimensional stability.

Excellent fatigue strength performance

Ti-6Al-4V titanium round bar has excellent fatigue performance. Under polished surface conditions, its high cycle fatigue limit can reach 510-600 MPa, which is particularly suitable for important parts such as shafts and connectors that are subjected to periodic stress.

Ti-6Al-4V has extremely high strength and rigidity while maintaining a relatively light density (about 4.43 g/cm³), which is about 40% lighter than stainless steel. In the annealed state, its tensile strength can reach more than 950 MPa and its elongation is about 14%, which can withstand high loads and has a certain toughness.

The performance can be further improved by heat treatment. Through solution treatment and aging (STA), the tensile strength of Ti-6Al-4V titanium round bar can be increased to 1035 MPa, which is suitable for key parts that require high fatigue strength, such as aviation connectors, orthopedic internal fixation bars, etc. The heat treatment state of the material (Annealed, Mill Annealed, STA) can be flexibly selected according to the application.
