Corrosion resistance of 6Al-4V titanium
Ti 6Al 4V is exposed to oxygen in air or water, it immediately and spontaneously forms a stable, continuous and firmly adherent oxide film. This gives it excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of media.
Ti 6Al 4V is highly resistant to corrosion in a variety of aqueous solutions, including seawater. It is particularly resistant to oxidizing acids, chlorine-containing media (including water), rocket propellants, and alkaline environments. Extensive corrosion of Ti 6Al 4V is only likely to occur in environments with strong reducing acids or dry chlorine.
Ti 6Al 4V is also susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and crevice corrosion in environments containing chloride ions or halogens. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid the use of chlorinated solvents, chlorine-containing cutting fluids and other chemicals during titanium processing.
Titanium and its alloys (including Ti 6Al 4V) are also susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Gaseous or electrochemical hydrogen can diffuse into the metal, forming brittle hydrides. Therefore, hydrogen absorption must be controlled during processing, particularly during heat treatment and pickling. Titanium alloy products are typically specified with a maximum permissible hydrogen content of 150 ppm.
Corrosion resistance level in different media environments
| Corrosive media | Corrosion resistance grade |
|---|---|
| Sulfuric Acid | Moderate |
| Sodium Hydroxide | Moderate |
| Sea Water | Excellent |
| Acetic Acid | Excellent |
| Salt spray (NaCl Salt Spray) | Excellent |

Notes:
- Avoid exposure to high concentrations of chloride, dry chlorine gas, and strong reducing acid environments
- During processing, hydrogen absorption must be prevented to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. It is recommended to control the hydrogen content to ≤ 150 ppm
