Popular titanium self tapping screws

Cutting type titanium self tapping screws (for thin metal sheets)

Cutting type titanium self tapping screws are designed for thin metal sheets.

A slot or cutting edge at the tip allows them to cut threads quickly after pre-drilling, making them ideal for aluminum and stainless steel panels.

  • ST3.9 / ST4.2 / ST4.8, length 12–25 mm
  • Pozi or Torx drive for stable torque transfer without slipping
  • Complete pilot hole size chart available (PDF download) to reduce assembly risks

Forming type titanium self tapping screws (for plastics and soft metals)

Forming type titanium self tapping screws are made for plastics and soft metals.

Their special thread profile forms threads directly by extrusion, producing no chips and avoiding debris risks.

They stay secure even in vibration environments, perfect for plastic parts and soft alloy joints.

  • ST3.5 / ST4.2, length 10–20 mm
  • Clean installation, strong threads, and long-term stability

Head & drive options

Head options

Pan head: A round and smooth design widely used for general assembly. Ideal for connecting titanium self tapping screws with both metal and plastic parts.

Countersunk head: Sits flush with the surface after tightening. Perfect for applications where appearance matters or protrusion must be avoided.

Oval / half countersunk head: Combines a flush fit with decorative appeal. Common in equipment housings and visible fixtures.

Flange pan head: Features a widened bearing surface to distribute stress. Excellent choice for thin sheets or areas requiring higher clamping force.

Head & drive options

Drive options

Phillips drive: A traditional option with broad compatibility. Easy to use but may slip under high torque.

Pozidriv drive: Offers greater contact area than Phillips. Provides more stable torque transfer, popular in industrial assembly.

Torx drive: Delivers the best anti-slip performance. Handles higher torque, making it the preferred choice for precision or high-strength connections.

Hex socket drive: Works well in tight spaces or where strong fastening is required. Often used in machinery and medical device assembly.

Titanium self tapping screws material comparison

Material Features Advantages Recommended applications
Grade 2 (CP Ti) Commercially pure titanium with good ductility and strong corrosion resistance Long service life, almost maintenance-free Ships, docks, desalination plants, seaside electrical cabinets
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) Titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy with high strength, toughness, and galling resistance High strength + anti-galling, handles higher torque Automotive tuning parts, sports equipment, high-strength mechanical joints
Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) Extra low interstitial version with better toughness and excellent biocompatibility Implant-grade material, meets medical standards Orthopedic and maxillofacial self tapping screws (strictly separated from industrial use)

Titanium self tapping screws applications

Marine and outdoor

In ships, offshore engineering, wind power, and outdoor electrical equipment, screws are constantly exposed to seawater, salt spray, and humidity.

Steel screws rust quickly and require frequent replacement. Titanium self tapping screws offer natural corrosion resistance, lifetime durability, and the lowest overall cost of ownership.

Grade 2 options in ST4.2 / ST4.8, pan or countersunk head, with Pozi or Torx drive. Insulating washers are recommended.

Automotive tuning

Car modification and motorsports demand lightweight, durable, and stylish fasteners. Traditional steel screws add weight and corrode easily.

Grade 5 titanium self tapping screws, ST4.2 / ST4.8 × 16–25 mm, flange pan or pan head, with Torx or Pozi drive, solve these issues. Optional anodized colors enhance the custom look.

Installation & torque guide

When installing titanium self tapping screws, always pre-drill the correct pilot hole based on the size chart. Oversized holes may cause poor grip, while undersized holes may crack the base material.

Use Torx or Pozidriv drives whenever possible. They handle higher torque and prevent slipping.

Apply PTFE or MoS₂ dry film lubricant, or an anti-seize compound, on the threads before installation. Drive at low speed with steady pressure to avoid galling or seizing.

Follow the recommended torque ranges for each diameter and drive type. Never exceed the maximum torque to ensure secure fastening without damaging the substrate.

When fastening into aluminum or steel, always add insulating washers and seals. This prevents galvanic corrosion and extends overall service life.

Recommended torque for Grade 5 titanium screws (reference only)

Bolt diameter Recommended torque (Nm)
M3 ≈ 1.7 Nm
M4 ≈ 3.6 Nm
M5 ≈ 6.9 Nm
M6 ≈ 11.1 Nm

Frequently asked questions

What are the disadvantages of titanium screws?

Titanium screws are more expensive, harder to machine, and may gall under load. However, their long service life and performance often justify the cost.

What are titanium screws used for?

They are widely used in marine equipment, automotive tuning, medical implants, aerospace, electronics, and optical instruments.

Are titanium screws better than steel screws?

Titanium screws are lighter, corrosion resistant, and rust free, with a superior strength-to-weight ratio. Steel screws are cheaper and suitable for general structures.

What are the disadvantages of self tapping screws?

They require a pre-drilled pilot hole, so installation is slower than self drilling screws. They also have limits when used on very hard materials.

Can titanium self tapping screws drill directly?

No, a pilot hole must be drilled first. The screw then cuts or forms the thread during installation.

What is the difference between self tapping and self drilling screws?

Self tapping screws cut or form threads in a pilot hole. Self drilling screws have a drill point that makes the hole and thread in one step.

Will titanium screws cause corrosion on aluminum parts?

Yes, titanium has a higher potential than aluminum, which may accelerate galvanic corrosion. Always use insulating washers or seals for protection.
